Al's TAFE Certificate IV I.T. (Website Design) Exercises
Semester TWO
Exercise 1
- One page essay including some small pictures You work for a company that wants to get into serious web design, and chances are you will be the one to do it. Write an A4 sized essay addressed to the CEO, discussing which web design package you would recommend. You might like to include some reasons why you wouldn't use other packages. Do the essay in Dreamweaver, including some illustrations.

Dear Little Johhny,
As requested, I am replying to your letter which indicated that you required the assistance of our company (AL's Wizzy Widgets) for the creation of a website for your company (LITTLE JOHHNY'S COMEDY SHOP). I understand that you may not know a great deal about the design fundamentals of website creation so I've taken the time to explain how I would go about it and what programs/software package I would use and why; as well as the software packages I wouldn't use and why.
Firstly, I would discuss with you in depth your requirements in the site you require. I have a list of questions (attached to this letter) which I would get you to answer which would give us a great idea of what you require. These questions would not only cover the creation of the site, but hosting, changes, ongoing updating of the site as well as any changes in plans you may have down the track.
Of the software applications I would use to develop your site I would use Macromedia Dreamweaver. This application is a leader in the industry, is supported by all the major browsers and has very reliable company backup & support
. Additionally, I would enhance any of your existing company logos or graphics in Adobe® Photoshop® as the end results would be far more readily accessible on almost all browsers. This application enables us to use layers within the development of an image and therefore allows us to make modifications of an image without going back to the start.
I would not use extensive amounts of Macromedia® Flash® graphics in your site as they offer no assistance with the major search engines. Most importantly I would not use MicroDollarBill's BackDoor Web Abortion software he calls M$ Frontpage®. It is the most crappiest web editing software ever made and would stuff your website with all the crappy code that the program itself puts in there. I, as the web designer, would never be happy having such crappy code in any site I create. Additionally, I would not waste my time or your money developing a website using M$ Notepad the way my good friend Louise was taught. But ol' Billy Boy thinks he's crappy software is the 'bees knees' in web editing.

Finally, to put some sophistication into your site I would use CSS throughout the site and if the need arises I'd use PHP for some dynamic layout.
